Things to know about your fireplace

1. NCSG recommends that all chimneys fireplaces, and vents be inspected annually and cleaned as often as the inspection suggests.

2. Always make sure the damper is completely open before using the fireplace.

3. Only burn kindling or a starter brick to start fires. Never use charcoal lighter fluid, kerosene, or Christmas wrapping paper to start fires.

4. Use only seasoned hard wood (i.e. oak, ash, hickory). Never use construction scraps. Soft and wet wood will produce more creosote and cause

smoking problems.

5. Firewood should be stored split in a dry place 9 months (minimum) to 1 year (recommended) to properly dry prior to burning. Never burn any cardboard in your fireplace (i.e. pizza boxes), any old Christmas tree limbs or trash.

6. Don't use oversized grates that touch the fireplace screen or side walls.

7. Distance your belongings from the hearth. Combustibles such as furniture, boxes, decorations, etc. should be kept at least three feet away from the chimney/fireplace area.

8. Working smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors are a must.

9. Every family should develop and practice a fire escape plan.

10. If you have a new backwall in your factory built fireplace, burn small fires for the first several times used. This will allow the new wall to cure and help reduce premature cracking.
